The name comes from the movie "Misfits" with Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable (German title: Misfits ? Nicht gesellschaftsfaehig")Rockabilly Button, pin or just a badge?
"One inch button badge" were first produced in the USA at the end of the 19th century as a cheaper alternative to expensive medallions and pendants. The invention of celluloid by John Wesley Hyatt in the year 1869 brought the world the first semi-synthetic form of plastic. As thermoplastics, these celluloid were widely used during the 19th and 20th century. The material was used to produce combs, knife handles, ball point pen housings, toys and rockabilly buttons.
Nowadays, acetate plastics are used instead of celluloid for the manufacturing of the buttons. Some of the first buttons ever made in Great Britain were made in the year 1897 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Queen Victoria's accession to the throne.
One of the biggest makers of "one inch button badges" in Great Britain during the first half of the 20th century was New Jersey Whitehead Hoag. Their business became popular for the manufacturing of the boer wars badges. With messages such as "Only one order ? forward!" and "England expects every man to do his duty!", they gained great popularity in a country that got swept away by a sense of patriotism. With the beginnings of the Sex Pistols and punk in the year 1976 the "button" became an essential fashion accessory. In the following 10 years people all over the world represented their loyalty to a band, music genres or youth culture by wearing "One Inch Button Badges".
The button with the worldwide biggest propagation is supposably the smiling sun with the Anti-Nuclear message. It was developed in 1975 from the citizens' initiative against atomic energy in Denmark. Since then this button was highly appreciated with a total quantity of approx. 20 to 30 million and in more than 40 languages all over the world.
Even though the buttons lost some of their popularity, they are still there. Many people like to wear them and the buttons are still widely-spread .... even today.
